Projects:

Qualitative study to optimize medical student learning experiences on hospital medicine teams

This qualitative project involved one-on-one interviews with eleven third year medical students and seven hospitalist physicians who worked on a hospitalist service in last one year to generate themes to enhance and optimize both faculty and learner experience on direct care teams at Medical College of Wisconsin.

Impact

  • Based on these results, a “hospitalist rotation specific orientation” for internal medicine clerkship students has been created
  • A faculty development program “Teaching in inpatinet setting “ workshop series was created and implemented for general internal medicine and pediatric hospitalists which was very well received.
  • Presented at National Meeting in March 2019 and manuscript is in progress for submission

Direct-care Apprenticeship Model

I am collaborating with two other institutions to develop an Entrustable Professional Activity (EPA) based curriculum for the internal medicine clerkship. This is a novel four-part curriculum for which will be implemented simultaneously at Medical College of Wisconsin, UT Southwestern Medical Center and Harvard Medical School during the upcoming academic year. The primary components of the curriculum are Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA) based handoff tool, clinical reasoning curriculum and faculty development curriculum. We were planning to start implementation of this curriculum from academic year 2020-21 but due to COVID-19 situation, it has been postponed. This model has the potential to impact training of medical students on hospital medicine across the country.
